Talk About A Bad Day

Well I’ll start off by touching on the World Junior Gold Medal Game. That is the type of game that just makes you sick as a fan. Up 3-0 after two periods I told a buddy “Ya their up but they look like they are running out of gas, but I’d imagine they’ll be fine in the third” boy was I wrong. Collapse was the right word because the boys did just that giving up five goals in the third period to lose 5-3. Full marks to Team Russia as they did not quit all tournament, and really could have folded up the tents after Canada went up 3-0.
So with the feeling of wanting to throw up in my mouth a little I flip on the Flames game. and just over a minute in I’m greeted by a familiar sight as the Canucks jump out to an early lead just over a minute in as another Flames defender just let Ryan Kesler go to the front of the net for a cross crease tap in. Follow that up with Kevin Bieksa getting a gift goal from Miikka Kiprusoff for a 2-0 lead for the Canucks after the first period despite Calgary outshooting the Canucks 12-7. The second period played out pretty much the same way with the Flames carrying the play for most of the period but Daniel Sedin tipped one past Kiprusoff to make it 3-0 and the Flames yet again make another goaltender look like a Vezina candidate for the rest of the game, until Tim Jackman scored his 6th of the season with 11 seconds left in the game to ruin Roberto Luongo’s shutout bid. And the game ended 3-1 and leaving my with the feeling of wanting to throw up in my mouth again!
Calgary managed to outshoot Vancouver 44-21 but you never got the feeling that the Flames were ever going to get back into it without getting a lucky bounce or two. Of course that never happened and the Calgary Flames have dropped two in a row and now have to look forward to having to knock off the Detroit Red Wings in order to end their two game slide and avoid falling further behind the pack in the Western Conference.
If you are expecting a major move of any sort from the Flames I wouldn’t expect it just yet while Jay Feaster still has the ‘interim’ tag on him. But the Flames ownership and president Ken King need to evaluate Feaster’s two game plans for the future of this team and either make him the full time GM or hire someone else immediately so the GM can make the moves needed for the future of this squad.
Side note on the Calgary Roughnecks. Owner Brad Bannister put the team up for sale yesterday. Brad put a solid 10 years in bring the NLL to Calgary including a pair of championships. His priority is to sell to local ownership. For those of you thinking the Calgary Flames may want to buy the Roughnecks, I would not expect anything soon on that with the group busy and concentrating on the Heritage Classic outdoor game in Calgary in February. After that I could see the Flames taking a look at acquiring the Roughnecks, but certainly no guarantees.
Have a good one!
