Urlacher Earns First NFC Defensive Player of the Month Nod

Today, Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for December/January.

Believe it or not, this is the first time Urlacher [1] has earned this honor.

During this time, Urlacher led the NFC in tackles with 49. He also had 1½ sacks, one forced fumble and three passes, helping to lead the Bears to its NFC North title win in December.

And last week, Urlacher had been selected to his seventh Pro Bowl. Yep, it’s been a good week for Urlacher.

This is the second time this season that a Bears player has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Month. Julius Peppers earned the honor in November. Along with four straight Bears wins that month, Peppers had 13 tackles, four sacks, six quarterback pressures and one forced fumble.

And the last time a Chicago Bears won the NFC Defensive Player of the Month? Trace Armstrong received the honor for his September 1990 play.

Now that’s a helluva dry spell. Welcome back Bears defense!
