Oilers skate past Islanders 2-1 to stop seven-game skid

In what seems like an eternity ago, the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers once ruled the NHL.
Flashing forward some 30 years, both teams now are just playing for pride and hopes of one day returning to the glory both franchises had during the 1980s.
In Edmonton Thursday night, Dustin Penner notched a short-handed goal and assist, leading the Oilers to a 2-1 victory over their former Eastern Conference rivals.
Not usually a strong suit, Edmonton (13-19-7) denied New York on seven power plays, including a late one when the Islanders had a 5-on-3 advantage, sending the visitors to their first loss on a road trip that began with wins over Detroit and Calgary.
“I was pretty comfortable on the ice,” Poulin told the AP. “My defensemen did a good job of clearing the front of the net and letting me see the puck.
Blake Comeau tallied New York’s only goal, as the Islanders remain in front of New Jersey in the Eastern Conference with a 12-20-6 mark.
