No, No, Nooooo Al what are you doing? That pretty much was the mindset of everyone from Raider Nation, to sports journalists, to Oakland Raiders’ punter Shane Lechler when head coach Tom Cable was let go this past Wednesday. Just when the Raiders seemed upward bound, Al Davis must restore the level of chaos in the Bay Area.
Although Cable posted a 17-27 record in his two and half year stint as the Raiders head coach, this past year was the first year he had the components to put together a solid showing this NFL season, helping the Raiders to their first non-losing season (8-8) in eight years. Playoff contenders, let alone Super Bowl contenders are not built over night.
Who knows, or will understand his reasons for firing Cable. If there was a time to fire Cable, at the end of last season seemed more likely, with Cable being involved in a physical altercation with a coach on his staff, as well as personal issues involving domestic abuse to past spouses came to surface during the season. Apparently, Davis felt like this squad should have made the playoffs this year. There was also a belief, Cable favored quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, while Davis was in the corner of Jason Campbell. Well one thing we know about our modern day kingpin, disagree with him and you will get the axe.
