There is no easy way to say so I’ll be blunt. That one was on Miikka. Whether you consider it to be two or three bad goals. Miikka Kiprusoff costed the Calgary Flames a point tonight.
The Calgary Flames dominated the game against the Detroit Red Wings and even gave their goaltender four goals to work with and once again find a way to lose. This time in a shootout 5-4 to the Wings.
Curtis Glencross and Anton Babchuk both had their best games of the season with both guys racking up three points apiece. The captain also had a goal and an a assist leading the Flames offensive charge. Brian Rafalski scored a couple of soft goals for his first two goals of the season that ended up being the difference in getting Detroit to the shootout where former Flame Todd Bertuzzi scored the only goal, giving the Red Wings the two points.
The single point does move the Flames back to within 6 points of the 8th seed in the Western Conference, however that number is a little misleading as most teams they are chasing have two or even three games in hand on Calgary. The Flames fall to 16-1-4 when they score three goals or more in game this season. That stat itself should tell you everything you need to know about the Calgary Flames and their troubles.
The Calgary Flames don’t play again until Tuesday in Raleigh when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes. I suspect we will have a much clearer look at how far the Flames will be out of the playoffs by the time that game rolls around.
Also the Calgary Flames will be hosting their Superskills Challenge at the Saddledome Sunday. It is a great event to take the little ones out to as the Flames participate in everything from the Fastest Man to the Breakaway Competition.
All this time off between games will also give Flames interim GM Jay Feaster time to decide how he wants to proceed heading towards the trade deadline. I really do suspect the Flames will be actively looking to move some bad contracts out at almost any price.
Have a good one!
