Uconn Rallies to Beat Texas in OT

This might have been THE make or break game for the young Huskies this season, they went into Texas’s home court and beat a very talented Texas team. Texas lost to Pitt by 4 early in the season, I think many expected the Longhorns to win. Connecticut has just come off 2 losses, both of them in conference. The Huskies lost to Pitt and Notre Dame on the road, to follow up a loss to the Irish by facing Texas was going to definitely tell you about this team. Kemba Walker has been the focal point of other teams defensively, they want the rest of the Huskies to beat you. Pitt, Notre Dame, and today Texas did a very good job of making him WORK for his buckets. What I have taken away from both of those losses were the strides the supporting cast has made. Kemba seems to be trusting them more and more, the guys are responding as well. Uconn fell down early, fought back, stumbled into overtime, and then won because of their defense and Walker down the stretch. Texas was led by Jordan Hamilton (2o pts& 11 rebs), Tristian Thompson (13 pts& 6rebs), and J’Covan Brown (20 pts). Dogus Balbay and Cory Joseph did a very good job forcing Walker into a bad shooting night, Walker had a HORRIBLE first half. The problem for Texas was, the rest of the Huskies didn’t. Alex Oriahki had a monstrous double-double with 11 points and 21rebounds, they also found out that Shabazz Napier is a PROBLEM. Napier came in and took over as the lead guard during Walker’s struggles. Napier harassed the Longhorn guards, made great decisions and hit BIG shots. Shabazz finished with 15 pts on 6-10 shooting, while hitting 3 of his 5 three point attempts. Roscoe Smith panicked late in the game by throwing the ball away with 11 seconds left, but outside of that Roscoe had a great game. Smith had 13 points and 6 rebounds, he did a great job guarding Hamilton when he was in the game. Now back to Walker, even though he had a tough game he still came up big down the stretch. Walker scored Uconn’s last 7 points in OT, Walker had 22 points and 9 REBOUNDS. Uconn moves to 12-2, they are still 1-2 in the Big East so they have a lot of work to do. Up next for the Huskies is a home game against Rutgers on Tuesday, that will give them the opportunity to get back to .500 in the conference. Hopefully the team grows from this performance, the younger players seem much more confident and assertive now. There’s not as much thinking as before, now we are getting a chance to see the players they can become!
