Islanders survive an Avalanche, leave Colorado with 4-3 OT win

When the New York Islanders began this latest five-game road venture with a win New Year’s Eve in Detroit, they may have turned some heads.

Now sporting a 3-0-1 record on this trip, the Islanders may be doing more than just turning heads, as they look to make a move to further distance themselves from the New Jersey Devils for the worst record in the NHL.

On Saturday in Denver, the Islanders (13-20-6) survived overtime and scored a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche, with John Tavares notching the game-winning goal, his 14th strike of the season.

Jeremy Colliton tallied his first goal of the season on a power play in the first period, then scored his second goal on a power play again to give his team the lead in the third period. Blake Comeau notched his 10th goal of the season on a power play, as New York got the win before heading to Chicago for a Sunday meeting with the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Kevin Poulin made his first start of his NHL career, tallying 34 saves, despite a ragged performance by his defense.

Poulin, who gave up two goals within the game’s first two minutes, allowed the game-tying tally to the Avalanche’s Milan Hejduk with just four seconds left.

Poulin made his NHL debut on Thursday in a loss at Edmonton in relief of 27-year-old Nathan Lawson, who has played in just three games (pair of starts) in his NHL career.

With goalie Rick DiPietro not making the trip due to injury, Poulin may see more action sooner rather than later.
