The PGA Tour season has finally begun and a playoff is where we begin this week’s What It Means:
Jonathan Byrd Winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions In a Playoff: Well what it literally means is that he’s the first winner of 2011, gets another year of being exempt on the PGA Tour, and gets into this year’s Masters.
Figuratively, he keeps his mojo going. His last shot of 2010 was the walk-off ace in Vegas and now he wins his first start of 2K11. He is someone I’d watch over the next couple months as we head into golf’s first major. Off exquisite ball-striking and a strong looking short game, he’s as hot as they come right now.
Robert Garrigus NOT Practicing Before Playoff: Pitch shot way off to the right, putt hit too hard, putt hit too hard, missed two and a half footer. Those are all the missteps of Garrigus on the first two playoff holes. Possible reason? He didn’t practice between the end of his round and the start of the playoff. Instead, he did an interview with Golf Channel, signed autographs, went to the locker to get more golf balls, went into the scorer’s trailer, said hi to his wife and child, and then started the playoff.
Failing to practice, stay loose, and keep your short game touch may well have been the final blow to Garrigus’ chances of winning at Kapalua. He’ll learn, though, and I bet he won’t do this next time.
Dustin Johnson and Natalie Gulbis Becoming An Item: In terms of on the course play, Graeme McDowell may be the hottest golfer in the world at the moment.
But off the golf course, the hottest two players in golf may be Johnson and Gulbis. Gulbis confirmed this week that they are officially a couple, and the fact that they are both Butch Harmon pupils and TaylorMade players means they could be spending a lot of professional and personal time with each other in the near future.
It’s certainly something to watch.
