Chorney to boost battered Oilers D

Taylor Chorney is on his way to Edmonton to hopefully bolster a battered and bruised Oilers’ blueline.

With 15 points (3-12) on the stats sheet for Oklahoma City in 40 games this season, Chorney was called up by Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini earlier today, as a fill-in for Jim Vandermeer who continues to suffer from a troubling ankle injury.

Edmonton’s top D man, Ryan Whitney, is also sidelined with an ankle injury.

Chorne, 23, is no stranger to “the show”, having played in 44 career NHL games with the Oil. Rumour has it that Alex Plante, another Edmonton first-round prospect, was upset that Chorney, and not he, was headed for E-Town.

The former Calgary Hitman blueliner may have a legitimate beef, boasting a better +/- rating than Chorney (by two points), but more importantly scores a proverbial knock-out punch over his Edmonton-bound teammate with 82-18 PIMS.

Let’s face it, teams are licking their chops to face the Oil these days, a club considered to be one of the softest – other than the nasty Theo Peckham – in the league.

Plante’s physical play is arguably exactly what Edmonton’s defensive corps requires right now – another intimidating D-man who knows his role – to crush unassuming forwards crossing the Oiler blue line.  And at 6′, 3″, 225 pounds, Plante, if disciplined, has the ability to strike some fear into opponents.

Chorney’s upside meanwhile, rests in his special team’s play, and his potential to anchor the blueline on Edmonton’s second PP unit. Once rated Edmonton’s top defensive prospect, this could be one of Chorney’s final opportunities to showcase his talent for Tambellini, Tom Renney and the rest of the coaching staff.

Chorney could see action as early as Tuesday when the Oilers travel to Dallas to take on the high-flying Stars.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up, sticks down. s
