The Dallas Cowboys ended off this disappointing season with a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas came to win the game with a less than a minute left and ended the season at 6-10. Not exactly what Dallas fans were hoping for with such an optimism to the start of the season and also with the Super Bowl being in Dallas this year. Well as we Cowboys fans like to do and that is cry over spilt milk, we will take the season and now lets start the how good can we be next season chapter.
Dallas announced over the last week that in-term Head Coach Jason Garrett has become the 8th Head Coach in Cowboys history. Garrett led the Cowboys to a 5-3 record when he took over the head coaching job when Wade Phillips was let go. The 5-3 is not bad considering the Cowboys were without their starting quarterback, lost rookie sensation wide receiver Dez Bryant but it did seem that the guys who were playing were really playing for not just the team but Garrett also which is kudo’s to Garrett.
One has to remember that Dallas lost 4 games this season by 7 points or less and also another 4 games to 3 points or less. I am not into stats but take even half of those games and turn them into victories and Dallas was vying for a playoff spot.
Where do we lay blame? really I am not one to lay blame anywhere on a team sport but clearly one has to look at the faulty Dallas defense which certainly did not play up to Dallas expectations this year by giving points away at will. Like leaving a kids birthday party and getting your parting gifts, the Cowboys were giving away points thanks to their defense. With all the slander against the defense, it can be noted that DeMarcus Ware led the NFC in sacks at 15.5, way to go DeMarcus. Hopefully you can bring that intensity to the field next season and some of it can rub off on the rest of the defense.
It has been noted that Garrett will get full reign on the coaching staff and Dallas owner Jerry Jones is going to keep his distance. With that being said I will go on saying that lets say Garrett gets ‘almost’ full reign on the coaching staff will be in his best interest to put the best coaches behind his players to put the best football team on the field. I know there are major Jerry Jones supporters out there and many a Jerry Jones non-supporters and that is coming from both Cowboys fans and non Cowboy fans alike.
Well there is a no-trade in the NFL during the playoffs, teams are allowed to interview coaching staff and the first task for Garrett is to try and find a defensive coordinator to hole up the lack of defense the Cowboys showed this season.
With hopefully a healthy Cowboy squad next season, a tweak here and there (hopefully on defense), we will hope the Cowboys will once again contend and still be playing this time next season which would be playoff time folks, playoff time.
On that note, enjoy the playoffs, see everyone in Dallas for the Super Bowl, I only wish I was going to be there but can continue to enter the contests.
as always, comments, questions, concerns, my ears are burning…..
