Pittsburgh beats up on Georgetown 72-57

The Panthers (16-1) raced to a 41-24 lead after the first half Wednesday night at Georgetown. Ashton Gibbs shot 50 percent (5-10) from long distance in route to his game-high 22 points.
Brad Wanamaker scored 14 points, Gilbert Brown scored 12 and Nasir Robinson scored 8 points.
Aside from Gibbs and Wanamaker, I thought Gary McGhee and Travon Woodall played fantastic games. McGhee collected 9 rebounds to go along with his 8 points. Woodall had one of those games that goes by unnoticed. He scored only 5 points, but dished out 5 assists to go along with 6 rebounds in just 20 minutes.
It was crucial that Pittsburgh won the turnover battle. They only had three turnovers compared to Georgetown’s nine. They were also the more aggressive team. They shot 31 free throws compared to Georgetown’s 25. They connected on 22 free throws (71 percent) compared to Georgetown’s 14 free throws (56 percent).
Neither team had great shooting numbers, but Pittsburgh raced to the quick lead and never looked back. Pittsburgh shot 22-49 from the floor (44.9 percent) and 6-16 from three (37.5 percent). Georgetown shot 19-50 (38 percent) from the floor, including 5-20 (25 percent) from three.
Chris Wright paced the Hoyas with 14 points, but only shot six times. Jason Clark only shot the ball three times all game (5 points). Austin Freeman scored 12, well below his average.
The game was not an offensive explosion, but Pittsburgh did enough. If Georgetown was not in such of a funk this game would have been closer.
It was still nice to see Pittsburgh come out on top on the road against a team that they are ranked higher than. They have a history of starting well early in conference play and this year’s start (4-0) is no different.
Georgetown (12-5, 1-4 Big East) has been struggling recently. I expected them to come out ready for this one, but that was not the case. They are having one of those mid-season slumps that teams will endure in the Big East.
You should still expect them to make some noise come March.
