Uconn Bounces Rutgers on Way to .500

The 9th Ranked Huskies kept their momentum rolling after taking down Texas this past Saturday, today’s opponent was Rutgers. Rutgers came out motivated, they haven’t beaten the Huskies the last 9 times they’ve played. Rutgers had a lead late in the 1st half, 23-21 before Uconn got it together. Uconn led 32-27 at the half, they started the 2nd half out playing typical “Uconn Basketball,” that’s suffocating defense and getting out in transition. Uconn went on to beat Rutgers for the 10th straight time in a row 67-53. Kemba Walker didn’t score 20 points this game, he finished with 18 and 6 rebounds. Alex Oriahki kept up his outstanding level of play in the Texas game (11pts&21boards) against Rutgers, A.O. recorded another double-double. A.O. finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots!! Shabazz Napier only had 4 points, but he ran the offense efficiently tallying 7 assists and 3 steals. Jeremy Lamb seems to be struggling of late, this is the first game he played in his new role off the bench. Lamb was a starter, but Calhoun didn’t like his defensive intensity when out there. Figured it would be better for Lamb to come in off the bench where he could look for his shot more. Jamal Coombs-McDaniel scored 9 points and grabbed 3 rebounds during his time on the floor, that was an encouraging sign as he hasn’t really produced in the minutes he’s been provided. Uconn is now 2-2 in the Big East, their next game is on the road at DePaul. Uconn is in 9th place in the Big East, they need to get in gear so they can advance in this tough conference!! Once again it was a positive sign to see that the rest of the team isn’t depending on Kemba as much, when it gets to the point that they’re ALL confident ALL the time Uconn will be a tough out. It’s actually refreshing to see Kemba’s average drop only because it means he’s not working as hard to CARRY the team. If Uconn wishes to compete for the Big East Crown they will need the younger players to step up and play WITH Kemba and A.O., not just be on the court WITH those 2 guys.
