Carmelo to Knicks Chatter heats up….(again)

Is Donnie Walsh hitting the panic button? Although everything before yesterday would have indicated not, this report begs to differ:
The New York Knicks have reached out to Memphis about participating in a three-team deal that would send Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo to Denver and Carmelo Anthony to New York, according to league sources.
Talks are in the infant stages and nothing is imminent, but the discussions are a sign of the Knicks’ increased aggressiveness in trying to trade for Anthony.
Emboldened by their belief that Anthony will refuse to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension with the New Jersey Nets , the Knicks have stepped up their efforts to bring the Nuggets star to New York.
The deal would also reportedly included any combo of Danillo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler or Landry Fields.
While I would still be reluctant to trade any of these three for a guy who may be available “fo’ free” (player wise) in the offseason, Gallinari is the player I would be most “ok” with letting jet off to Denver with Landry Fields being the least OK….
The Utah game notwithstanding (chalk that up to wanting to go home), the Knicks have shown that winning without Gallo in the lineup isn’t impossible. Surprisingly, they haven’t missed a beat. One has to think that an addition of Carmelo Anthony wouldn’t hurt that and obviously there is tremendous upside.
That being said, it makes the most sense to trade Chandler because of his contract.
Trading Landry Fields would be a mistake. He hasn’t been great of late, but seems to have the intangibles that one player on a championship team always seems to have.
Hold on to that guy.
