Miikka Kiprusoff has been playing recently like a man with something on his mind. I honestly can’t tell you the last time he has played so poorly for three straight games. On one hand it you could easily chalk it up to the fact that eventually Miikka was going to go through a slump like this. On the other hand you could say he is distracted.
I’ve never seen Kiprusoff allow so many goals to go through him on sloppy mental mistakes. It is one thing if shots get tipped over your shoulder, or you get beat by the perfect shot. But that has not been happening recently. Goals have been going though Kiprusoff and it’s sloppy technique. I know Flames goaltender coach Jamie Mclennan will be working with Miikka to get him through this stretch but I think it could be something bigger that is causing the problem.
I believe Jay Feaster has asked Miikka to waive his no trade clause and give him a list of teams he would be willing to go to. With the solid backup play of Henrik Karlsson and with Leland Irving tearing it up in the AHL finally living up to the promise of a first round pick, combined with the fact that the Calgary Flames are not making the playoffs unless they go on a impressive run and quick, I believe that the Flames have decided that if they can move Miikka it may be in the best interest of the franchise going forward to get a solid return for him.
One would have to think that Washington, San Jose, and Philadelphia would have some interest in Kiprusoff, not to mention a few other teams that may be close to the playoffs and feel a guy like Kiprusoff could push them in to the post season. Make no mistake about it, Miikka Kiprusoff on a better team is a top 5 to top 10 goaltender in the NHL. However the Flames are a team that is hard on goaltenders often requiring them to allow one goal or less to win. That has to be mentally draining as well.
The more one sits back and thinks about the more you come to the conclusion that it is time for Miikka Kiprusoff to move on. You could like get a decent pick and a good prospect for him, and now is the time to make that happen. As for the die hard Kiprusoff fans remember… It’s about the front of the jersey, not the back of it!
Have a good one!
