Roy to Have Surgery on Both Knees

The Portland Trail Blazers and their hobbled All-Star Brandon Roy decided on thursday that he would have arthorscopic surgery on both knees. These surgeries are performed to clear away dead tissue and are considered a short term fix to relieve pain and soreness. The Blazers and their knee specialists apparently decided that the uncharted waters of cartilage or meniscus replacement surgery on an athlete’s knee would be too risky and guarantee nothing, and decided to go in the direction a more minor surgery.
This is really a temporary fix,” Cho said of the arthroscopic surgeries. “Nothing is permanent. And it might not help. We have to try it and see how he feels.”
Sounds like all this does is postpone a more long-term decision because this does nothing to address Roy’s well documented knee condition. It seems like they think if they can get him on the court before the end of the season they can determine he can play without having any setbacks again. If there is a lockout then they might then be more inclined to have a significant surgery if necessary.
Frankly, I’m against the idea of trying to bring Roy back this season, especially in light of the potential lockout. Why not give him as much time to get those knees as strong as they can be. Obviously they’ve deemed these surgeries worth a shot before having to face the possibility of a more risky and long-term procedure, so why give him at least the rest of the year to rest. It’s not like he’s going to pull a Willis Reed and limp back on the court to lead them to a championship.
One thing that is clear though is Portland does not want to take any desperate measures quite yet.
This does nothing however to change the fact that the Blazers need to go about their business as if Roy isn’t on the team. The Blazers have a critical game vs Phoenix before a long home stand that may well determine their course of direction the rest of the season.
I am going to analyze a few of the approaches the Blazers could take prior to the deadline in the coming days. For now it looks like the Blazers are taking the wait and see approach with both Roy and the Blazers currently playing without him.
