Arbitration Avoided for Francisco

Outfielder Ben Francisco has agreed to a one-year, $1.175 million contract with the Phillies. Francisco had been eligible for salary arbitration.

[1]“We are pleased to have come to terms with Benny,” said general manager Ruben Amaro. “Our goal in this process is to come to equitable deals. Benny, as we’ve stated, will have an opportunity to play more regularly in right field this year and I am looking forward to the competition beginning this spring.”

[2]Francisco, 29, hit .268 last season with 6 HR and 28 RBI in 88 games, including 28 starts (17 in left field, 10 in right field and one in center field). As a pinch hitter, he batted .282 (11-39) with three doubles and seven RBI.

[3]Acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 29, 2009, in a six-player trade that included left-hander Cliff Lee, Francisco is a .263 career hitter in the major leagues with 39 home runs, 140 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 360 games for the Indians (2007-09) and Phillies (2009-10).

[4]Right-handed pitcher Kyle Kendrick is the Phillies’ only other arbitration-eligible player. Kendrick and Vance Worley are in competition with Joe Blanton for the Phillies fifth starter’s job – though Blanton is rumored to be on the trading block. Former Mets pitcher John Maine has been approached as a possible alternative, which would make Blanton and his expensive contract expendable.
