Uconn Coach Jim Calhoun said the Big East is known to eat it’s young, well that was defintiely the case as the Huskies beat the DePaul Blue Demons 82-62. DePaul has now lost 18 straight conference games, the Big East isn’t a place for the meek. DePaul was led by former Uconn commit Cleveland Melvin, Melvin paced the Blue Demons with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Melvin’s performance was out-shined by that of Mr. Kemba Walker and his “young” teammates. Uconn is definitely hard to game-plan for because of Walker, when the young guys get going the Huskies are almost impossible to stop. Walker scored 31 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and stole the ball 3 times!! Alex Oriahki had a hand in this win as well, A.O. had 11 points and 3 blocks. Oriahki grabbed just 5 rebounds, but that might have been due to his teammates really helping out on the boards. Uconn got out-rebounded by DePaul 40-36, the other story here was the play of Jeremy Lamb. Lamb if you remember, was taken out of the starting line-up for the past 2 games. Lamb made his case to Calhoun on why he should be in the starting 5 more often, Lamb had one heck of a game today. Lamb had 13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks! Fellow Freshman Roscoe Smith had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. The more Uconn gets contributions from these young players, the further they are going to go in this conference and in the NCAA Tournament should they be there. Uconn has a big matchup on Monday, they host 7th Ranked Villanova. The match up of the back-courts will be pivotal, Uconn can also not afford to get beat on the boards. This will surely be an exciting game, will Uconn have another “team” effort against Nova?? Kemba needs them to!
