Cowboys Bring on Rob Ryan

The Cowboys are set to introduce Rob Ryan as their new defensive coordinator which has sparked a good deal of debate over whether it’s a good signing or not.

Ryan, the twin brother of Rex Ryan, spent last season with the Cleveland Browns and the prior 5 seasons with the Oakland Raiders. Neither team was ever really revered for their defense, nor were they very deep with star players nor did the teams ever really improve significantly while he was there. Though under him last season the Browns defense averaged 20.8 points a game good for 13th in the league, and save for the blowout in week 17 where they gave up 41 to Pittsburgh, they averaged 19.4 points a game. There certainly is potential, but it’s hard to get a feel for what Ryan can do for a Cowboys defense that has underachieved over the past few seasons.

Rob’s brother Rex is excelling as the head coach of the New York Jets which with him, as it was in Baltimore, is a defensive powerhouse. The difference for Rex is that he has had some very talented defensive players in both Baltimore and New York. Which is not a knock on Rex, but Rob’s best defensive player has been Nnamdi Asomugha. Hopefully their relationship could lead him to the Cowboy’s, though that may just be wishful thinking. These are just the facts though, and not excuses for Rob’s defenses.

Rob Ryan is a fiery coach though, and had the respect of the players he coached, which is something that could really help in Dallas where the players have lacked the expectations and desire from a coach under Wade Philips. Ryan is a good motivator, and perhaps that is what Dallas, who has significantly more talent on defense than Ryan’s previous teams, needs to get them to play up to their potential.

Taking him on as defensive coordinator though seems to be a very safe pick for new head coach Jason Garrett. Ryan has experience and pedigree that give a good shine to the hiring. As a team that gave up the second most points in the league, only behind Denver, there is only one way for the defense to go.
