That’s A Good Trip (Or is it?) Regher Trade?

The Calgary Flames showed a lot of character again last night in Montreal storming back from a 4-0 deficit in the second period to tie the game 4-4 only to lose in OT on a rocket of a shot by PK Subban, that Henrik Karlsson had no chance on. That’s right boys and girls. Henrik Karlsson made his third appearance of the road trip. And was a large reason why the Flames got four instead of two points out of those three games.
So lets recap the road trip from the Kiprusoff perspective. Game #1 in Carolina, Miikka gives up a couple soft goals and leaves the game down 5-2. Calgary storms back to lose in OT salvaging a point. Game #2 in Ottawa Miikka sits on the bench as Karlsson does enough to give the Flames a 3-2 win. Game #3 in Toronto Miikka does play very well especially in the third period and gives his team a 2-1 OT win. Game # 4 in Montreal Down 4-0 quick with anywhere from one to three soft goals against depending on your opinion. Karlsson again comes in and makes a couple huge stops while the Flames are pressing. Calgary ties it up and salvages another point. Six out of a possible eight points for the team but the Flames had to yank their starting goaltender twice. That isn’t good.
Which leads to the question now of what to do with Kiprusoff and Karlsson? In my opinion it is now time to instill a ‘Get Points and You Are In’ philosophy to the goaltending. Which basically means if you start the game and the team comes away with points you are starting the next game. The time has passed to just give Miikka Kiprusoff the benefit of the doubt because the Calgary Flames need to continue getting points in pretty much every game they play. The deficit has been trimmed to 6 points for the Flames to catch 8th place Colorado. An even better scenario is that if the Flames win their games in hand they would only be behind Anaheim by 4 points for a playoff spot!
Now I’ll try and address the Robyn Regher rumors. I do believe there have been talks with teams about Robyn Regher and he is a very marketable commodity to a team who is serious about a playoff run. Guys like Regher who are great shutdown D at a good cap hit don’t come available very often. What didn’t help slow down the rumor mill was Regher leaving the ice early in the morning skate yesterday with no comment. That often means trade, in this case it didn’t. I do believe that Regher is on the block, but Robyn does have control on where he wants to go. If the Flames close in the playoffs they would consider trading Regher for scoring, or they just won’t trade him. If the Flames fall too far back then the Flames will move Robyn as part of a retooling, not a full blown rebuild.
Perhaps Miikka Kiprusoff is the next ‘core’ player that could be on the block. I don’t think Iginla is going anywhere now.
Have a good one!
