Dubinsky Down, Rangers’ Offense Comes Alive

When g.m. Glen Sather announced that the Rangers’ leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky would miss three to four weeks with a leg injury just before tonight’s game against the Maple Leafs, it hurt. But not for long.
Losing Ryan Callahan — the heart — was bad enough but tacking on Dubinsky — the soul– of the Rangers system, didn’t bode well for the team struggling offensively.
But the Rangers came out swinging and exploded for seven goals against the Leafs. (That’s half the goals they scored (14) in the month of January thus far in one night.)
The often MIA sniper Marian Gaborik led the way. Gaborik netted four goals and one assist to put that eight-game goal drought behind him. His patience and quick hands on the side of the net to score when Leafs’ goaltender Jonas Gustavassn lost his stick was highlight reel real good. It was his third — and most memorable — hat trick of the season.
Great response from the struggling star who has seen more time on the bench than the scoresheet this season.
His latest linemates Sean Avery and Artem Anisimov combined for seven assists.
Henrik Lundqvist remained focused locking down the net for his 31st career shutout.
After two back-to-back 3-2 losses, with last minute unsuccesful scoring frenzies, the win is exactly what the Rangers need for their busy game schedule ahead. They hit the road facing Carolina tomorrow, Atlanta on Saturday and Washington on Monday.
The Rangers can only hope that this game was the missing confidence booster to snap Gaborik out of his slump with five games in seven nights on the horizon. The continued all-around contributions from Brian Boyle, Brandon Prust and rookies Derek Stepan and Mats Zuccarello continue to impress.
More Men Down: Dubinsky will miss 3-4 weeks with a stress fracture of the fibula in his left leg.
Ruslan Fedotenko left the second period with an injured shoulder and is expected to miss two to four weeks.
Call Up: Forwards Chad Kolarik and Brodie Dupont have been recalled from the Connecticut Whale.
