YPSILANTI, Mich. —- Through the storm they came together, the Eastern Michigan University basketball team pushed themselves and moved forward from the one game suspension of senior power forward Brandon Bowdry.
Unfortunately there was no miracle and Eastern Michigan University were beaten at the Convocation Center, Wednesday night, 60-51 by Ball State University.
Eagle power forward Brandon Bowdry served his one game suspension for conduct that was deter mental to the team and started the game with a three point shot that found nothing but nylon and it looked like it could be one of those nights that only Hollywood could produce but the supporting cast for the Eagles could not make any kind of appearance and combine that with poor shooting and porous defense the result was another easy lost.
Bowdry led both teams in scoring with 26 points and he pulled down six rebounds but the closes Eagle that could make double figure in scoring and help Bowdry was guard Quintin Dailey who came off of the bench and chipped in with just five points, 11 Eagles made an appearance in the game and 10 players scored points but when a team puts up 23 more shots than the opponent then good things should be the result from the amount of chances, the Eagles only shot 31.7 percent for the game.
The Eagles offense feeds off of any kind success from the defense, the Eagles are able to get down the court and either drive to the hoop for the score and a foul but it also gives the offense an option to slow down and get into a half-court set play and the ball moves around the perimeter.
Sometime the Eagle offense falls in love with their jump shots and tries too many long range shots that fail to hit the mark and the Eagles are out of position for any kind of offensive rebound chances- poor shooting should provide excellent rebounding opportune for the Eagles but they were out worked on the boards 41-32 by the Cardinals.
Ball State University pulled down 36 defensive rebounds while Eastern Michigan University got nine offensive rebounds.
Ball State University is a solid ball club with size and speed and Cardinal basketball coach Billy Taylor said after the game his team played with confidence and winning on the road in the Mid-American Conference is good for any team.
“Eastern is a tough place for us to play and we have not fared well here and we struggled against Eastern in recent years,” Taylor said after the game. “So for us to come in here and get a road win is especially good for our ball club. Hard fought like we thought it would be they are very physical team, they are long and athletic, they put pressure on the basketball and our guys showed a lot of character.”
Taylor also said the Cardinals did a lot of things out of character he said his team did not take care the basketball and missed too many free throws but he said he thought the Cardinals defense played one of their best games of the season.
The Eagle defense wanted to limit the touches that Cardinal center Jarrod Jones would get and sag the defense in front of him and in the first half Jones got into foul trouble, Jones picked up his third personnel foul with 6:55 left in the first half.
Jones came out in the second half and led his team in scoring leaving the floor with 15 points and eight rebounds.
“I just wanted to bounce back in the second half,” Jones said. “In the first half the coach and the coaching staff kept telling me to keep my head in the game and not worry about it and I kept encouraging my team mates.”
The success of the Cardinal offense came from their point guard Randy Davis, Taylor said he thought his guard showed some good leadership qualities on the court.
“I kept telling the guys to keep on running and keep on doing what we do and everybody was getting easy baskets which helped with the flow,” Davis said.
“I thought that Randy did a nice job probing the defense in the first half understanding that Jarrod (Jones) was on the bench, he was able to find people,” Taylor said about the play of Davis. “It is important to us because we were struggling on the road.”
Eastern Michigan University basketball coach Charles Ramsey did not participate after the game conference, he optioned to retreat to the sanction of his office.
Eastern Michigan University next game will be a Sunday afternoon contest at the convocation Center against Central Michigan University the tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
