All’s Wells that ends Wells

News flash! The Angels are awake! That’s right, your Los Ang…Whatever..Halos have made a deal, getting Vernon Wells from the Blue Jays for Juan Rivera and Mike Napoli.

Wells will fill the gaping hole in centerfield. He has won 3 Gold Gloves, so defensively the Angels should be set. Offensively, I’m not completely sold. That doesn’t mean that I am not happy, but I do have reservations. Last year, he hit 31 homeruns while driving home 88 runs. However, between 2007-2009 he averaged 17 homeruns and 74 runs batted in. Those are less than stellar numbers for a guy owed about 86 million over the next 4 years. He has played more than 149 games a season over the past 9 years, so we can pretty much expect to see him in the lineup every day.

I’ve read that Wells could move over to left, keeping Peter Burgos in center and Hunter in right. I would wait and see on that, as Burgos is great on the defensive end, but not so good on the offensive end.

Seeya Rivera and Napoli. I like Napoli, even though he was lacking somewhat defensively, he was a long-ball threat at the plate. Rivera, to me, seemed to regress every year. He became a guy that when the game was out of reach, he would smack a homerun. If the game was within reach, he made an out. At one time he was pretty good in left field, but lately balls hit to him became an adventure. He shouldn’t be hard to replace.

Jeff Mathis is now the number one catcher. I guess with Napoli gone we can expect Mathis to reach his full potential, whatever that may be. I’d be surprised if he hit better than .220, while continuing to throw the ball into left or centerfield. I hope I am wrong.

Still don’t see the Bobby Abreu leftfield experiment going too well. He is a fine player, but is better suited to being DH.

All in all I am happy the Angels made the move. I’ve heard that Wells is a great clubhouse guy and he should be a lethal weapon in the middle of the Angels lineup.

Could another trade be on the horizon for the Angels? Mike Trout is going nowhere, except into the Angels lineup as soon as next year (Maybe even late in 2011). Burgos, Reggie Willets & Mark Trumbo, along with one of their young pitchers could help the team acquire help at 3rd or behind the plate.

Thank you Angels for waking up
