WHAT IT MEANS: January 24, 2011

Lot of stuff happened in the golf world today — here’s this week’s What It Means:
Everything Surrounding Martin Kaymer’s Sunday: First of all, he won today in Abu Dhabi — his fifth in the last 12 months — and is now the number two player in the world, supplanting Tiger Woods. He’s calm, cool, collected and absolutely dominant right now, winning by eight against a stacked field. He’s my Masters pick unless Tiger starts 2011 hot.
To me, Kaymer becoming number two is largely irrelevant — he’s going to be number one very shortly. What is more relevant is how fast he’s come on to the scene. He’s gone from “who?” to someone who has to be reckoned with. And fast.
Jhonattan Vegas Wins the Hope: The pride of Venezuela battled back from a three-putt on the final hole of regulation and a tee shot in the water on the second playoff hole to win his first PGA Tour event.
The rookie has come on the scene strong, and has to be one to watch out for as the 2011 PGA Tour season continues. He’s long and has a gutsy putter — great combination.
Phil Mickelson Falls to #6 in the World: That is the world ranking stat that shocks me most as we head into the week of Tiger’s return at Torrey. Not Kaymer to #2, not Tiger #3, but Mickelson to sixth.
Slowed by psoriatic arthritis in the second half of last year, he looked pretty average in his debut this week. He’ll play eight times before Augusta — an extremely high number for Phil — and that should give us a good read on where his game is heading into the season’s first major in April.
