What a great tournament it has been so far, for both the men and women. The top seeds have dominated, with both one, two and three seeds all still alive. There have been unforeseen upsets, like the four seed Soderling losing to a 19 year old qualifier in the 4th round. Best of all we still haven’t even seen the best tennis as of yet, and we have seen some great tennis. Schiavone did herself proud playing the longest match in women’s grandslam history, almost 5 hours, and coming back a day later to give the number 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki a run for her money.
Here is what I am looking forward too:
Federer vs Djokovic/Berdych winner. Hopefully it is the Djoker so we can have the 2 seed play the 3 seed to reach the finals. The last time these two men met, it was in the Semi’s of the US Open where Djokovic played some of the best tennis of his life and beat Federer. Federer wants revenge and a chance for another grand slam title.
Nadal vs. Murray. I know neither has beaten their quarter final opponent yet, but neither should be in for much of a struggle. This is going to be the best match of the tournament outside the final, considering how these two men are steam rolling opponents.
Clijsters vs Zvonareva. Just like with Murray and Nadal, neither has won their quarterfinal matchup but Clijsters shouldn’t have a problem, however my darkhorse Kvitova could give Zvonareva all she can handle. If these two meet it could be the best match of the tournament and a replay of the US Open final, where Kimmy Clijsters beat Vera Zvonareva. Hopefully Vera doesn’t melt down like she has in the past. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB8mRRKVlFk for prime example.
I can’t wait for the two finals with so many lingering questions. Can Federer repeat and add to his record for most grand slams? Will Nadal win thus holding all four grand slam titles at once and gain that much closer to to Fed’s record? Will Andy Murray finally break through and win his first? (Doubt it). Will Kim Clijsters stake her claim as the best player in women’s tennis even after having a child by winning another grand slam? Will Caroline Wozniacki finally win her first grand slam and prove she deserves the number 1 ranking? (Hopefully). Will something else happen that isn’t expected at all like Li Na, Kvitova, Berdych sneak in there and win the title unexpectedly?
