Jerry West Says Laker Championship Window is Closing

Posted By Donovan Williams On Jan 25 2011 @ 12:13 pm In Los Angeles Lakers | No Comments

Jerry West made news yesterday by stating the obvious. The Lakers are old.

Let’s take a look at West’s comments taken from the OC Weekly:

“I don’t think the Lakers will be good for much longer,” West predicted. “You can keep a car running for a long time by changing the tires, etc. But you can’t change a player’s tires.”

He also called them “long in the tooth.”

My response: Duh.

The Lakers are not building with a core group of young players like Oklahoma City to make a deep playoff run. These are the two time defending champions who have represented the western conference in the finals three years in a row.

You know what else I have to say about this? So effin’ what.

We’ll worry about the future of the Lakers when Kobe is ready to retire. Phil is likely gone after the season. Derek Fisher is in great shape but may not be playing for too much longer himself.

The Lakers do need to get younger, but that a problem for later.

Lakers focus on the now. And the now is all about being healthy enough to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy in June. And this team is good enough to be winning the title this summer.

And it’s not like the Lakers are the only team that has the “old” label attached to them. The Celtics, their chief rival, are certainly not spring chickens, nor are the San Antonio Spurs.

I’ve written about this several times here on this blog post, the Lakers do not need to hustle for balls in the middle of January. I don’t care about the random loose ball versus the Clippers on a Sunday afternoon. I am sure “The logo” would like to see the Lakers have a little more hustle and put a complete effort out each and ever game, but that is not realistic.

And it doesn’t matter.

If this was a younger squad, I’d be concerned but since this team is “long in the tooth” I am confident that this team will be ready to go at playoff time.

Because when you are old, you are also wise. And these Lakers are wise enough to know that the loose ball is life or death in May and June.

January is for the Dallas Mavericks and the NFL Playoffs.
