PGA Tour Sleeper: David Duval

Syrupy swing, Oakley M frame shades and a recognizable lazy gait…nothing more than the exterior characteristics of a great champion. However, what lay on the inside was a fierce competitor, unleashing a torrid stretch of 13 PGA Tour victories from 1997-2001, including the 1997 Tour Championship, 1999 Players Championship and 2001 Open Championship. Unfortunately, following his Open victory, Duval went through a dismal stint, where he not only lost his golf game but also questioned his life. Therefore in 2004, Duval reduced his golf schedule and during his self imposed hiatus, discovered for himself just how important it was for him to become a good family man. Duval then returned to a full schedule in 2005 along with the determination to show his family just how much of a champion he once was.
Upon his return, Duval struggled with his game and when his major championship exemption terminated at the end of the 2005 season, Duval utilized sponsor exemptions from 2006-2008. In 2009, David had to resort to his career money list exemption and despite a T2 finish at the 2009 US Open, Duval’ s game was still too inconsistent to earn his PGA Tour card for 2010. Therefore, Duval utilized sponsor exemptions again; however this time his game showed enough consistency, finishing #106 on the money list, thereby retaining his PGA Tour card for 2011.
Working diligently on his comeback effort, Duval reconnected with the golf swing that brought him early career success. Duval also underwent a major sponsor and equipment change when Nike terminated their relationship with him at the end of 2010, as Duval now plays with Scratch Golf equipment and is sponsored by Perky Jerky.
I know, I know…Perky Jerky??? Well, word has it that the Perky Jerky founders are Duval’s caddie and his caddie’s brother. Apparently these “jerks” (hey, that’s what they call themselves) accidentally spilled an energy drink into a package of beef jerky. Overnight the energy drink made the beef jerky tender and therefore more edible. This miracle food also fueled them for their expedition the following day…so there you have it folks, a nutritious diet of beef jerky, energy drinks and careless spillage spawned a multi-million dollar business idea…move over social networking! So now that we are equipped with all this insight, how does the 2011 season shape up for ole Double D, let’s take a look.
Besides for the endless supply of Perky Jerky in his golf bag this year, I do believe that Duval will have enough “fuel” (I just couldn’t resist) to win in 2011. Golfers say that it only takes one round to find their game and even though that round often eludes some of the best players on tour, Duval’s magical round and subsequent breakthrough win is right around the corner. Duval plays well in California, noted by his T2 finish at the 2010 National Pro Am at Pebble Beach and a T6 at the 2010 Frys.com Open in the Fall Series. Therefore look for Duval to secure an early season victory in California. Duval has also stated that he sees himself winning the US Open before he retires, noted by his strong T2 finish at the 2009 US Open at Bethpage Black. If he does win another major this year, especially the 2011 US Open at Congressional, it may just one and done for the great champion, David Duval.
