Siva Leads Louisville Past Huskies

Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Jan 29 2011 @ 3:12 pm In UConn | No Comments

Peyton Siva has had a decent year, today’s game he was brilliant!! Siva had 19 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals in leading the Cardinals to victory. Siva had some help in the form of Terrance Jennings with 16 points and 10 rebounds, now Louisville won 79-78 so it wasn’t by a large margin.  The game went into double overtime,  both teams played their hearts out in typical Big East fashion. As for the Huskies there are a lot of things good that came out of this loss and some bad things as well. For the bad, the Huskies missed free throws down the stretch in regulation and both overtime periods. They also didn’t play their trademark suffocating defense, their interior defense was pourus to be generous. Siva was not only allowed to get into the lane, but he wasn’t even contested by the Uconn bigs. For the positive, Uconn may have stumbled upon something really special going forward. Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb proved that they are ready and willing to step up and become VIABLE options on offense. Kemba Walker is getting targeted on offense by every team they play, he is NOT allowed to beat you. What’s great about this going forward is that the rising level of play by Napier and Lamb will start to alleviate some of the pressure defenses put on Walker. In today’s game, during the first half specifically Lamb carried the Huskies offensively with 12 points in the first half. Lamb didn’t really get touches in the 2nd half and in overtime but still finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Napier had a career-high 21 points, he took 11 three point shots and made 5 of them. Walker started off slow as usual and got going late in the 2nd half  and in OT, the offense got a little stagnant when all 3 players were trying to win the game. It’s a beautiful problem if you ask me when thinking about how far this team has come from the start of the season, going forward teams WILL have to prepare for Lamb and Napier. Walker did finish with 20 points, but he is still strugling with his shot going 7 of 23 from the field. Roscoe Smith didn’t have a great game offensively, but he was on the boards with 12 rebounds to go with his 5 points. Uconn did lose, but they definitely gained something from this loss and that’s the growth of these younger players. Uconn will become more difficult to stop offensively, these young guys ARE options. They are no longer just there, Uconn is going to be a PROBLEM going forward. The Huskies are now 17-3 and 5-3 in the Big East, up next for the Huskies are the Syracuse Orangemen on Wednesday. Let’s see if the younger players confidence continues to grow and if Kemba can break out of this slump!!
