I jest. The Orioles signed veteran right-hander Justin Duchscherer today, agreeing on a one-year deal. Based on incentives, Duchscherer could earn up to $4.5 million if he makes 30 starts in 2011.
Justin was successful as both a starter and a reliever with Oakland, but has battled hip and elbow injuries, and depression, since 2007. He’s a two-time all-star and master of the strike zone.
Duchscherer is a breaking ball pitcher. He throws tons of tight sliders to all hitters, at all locations. He routinely attempts to backdoor left-handed hitters with it and frontdoor righties. Justin also throws a maddeningly slow 12 to 6 curveball.
Duchscherer’s fastball will only clock in around 85 mph nowadays, but he can make it run to his arm side with good control. He does have a changeup hiding away somewhere, but it’s a rare pitch for him.
Justin should break camp with a spot in the starting rotation. Effectiveness should not be a problem, but it just remains to be seen how long he can stay healthy.
