Nuggets vs. Nets: Nets Defeat Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets Soundly

Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points in Newark tonight. However, it was still as a member of the Denver Nuggets.
Twelve days after New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov called off Carmelo trade talks, the Nets pounded the Nuggets, 115-99, at “The Rock.” After losing two straight games, this was a big win for the Nets, who continue their streak of playing well at home.
New Jersey moved over the .500 mark (12-11) at home with tonight’s victory. Denver has now given up 100 or more points in 15 straight road games.
Former Net Kenyon Martin came out with the hot hand early and scored the first five points of the game. He had the night off Sunday in Philadelphia so appeared well rested after recently returning from an injury.
The Nets responded big time and went on a 15-0 run. Travis Outlaw was unconscious from the outside, scoring eight of the 15 points.
Anthony quieted the crowd quickly with five straight points as part of a 9-0 run for Denver, but the Nets picked up their offense to take a 10-point lead after one.
Outlaw finished with 13 points in the first quarter on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Only Brook Lopez has scored more points in a quarter (15) for the Nets this season.
New Jersey extended the lead to 14 early in the second quarter. Both teams were hot from behind the arc, especially the Nets, who were 6-of-9 from three-point land in the first half.
Despite 23 points in the first half by Anthony, the Nets still led 63-50 at the break. The 63 points marks the most scored in a half by the Nets this season.
The Nets left off right where they started by continuing to shoot well from the field and extended their lead to 18. The Nuggets did show signs of life midway through the third quarter with a few good possessions to cut the deficit back to four. Chauncey Billups caught fire during this run to close out the third.
The pace of play picked up even further early in the fourth as the teams traded baskets. The Nets were able to maintain their lead throughout the fourth and sealed the win at the free-throw line late.
Lopez led the Nets with 27 points while Outlaw finished with 21. Devin Harris recorded a career-high 18 assists.
Anthony Morrow scored 18 points off the bench and didn’t miss a shot from the field all night. Kris Humphries tacked on 15.
The Nets remain home to take on the 76ers Wednesday. Philadelphia has been playing some good basketball lately so the Nets will need another strong effort similar to tonight’s performance.
