Everything Is Riding on Crowell’s Decision

Never in all of Mark Richt’s tenure as the Georgia Bulldog head football coach has there ever been a more important football recruit than running back Isaiah Crowell – arguably the No. 1 rated RB according to several recruiting sites.  Mark Richt and his football program hit a low point when his team lost to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl and finished the season 6-7.  After the game for the first time, fans were wondering if Richt still has the capability to win again.  Back in 2005 after Richt won his 2nd SEC title, no one ever would question his coaching capability.

After the Liberty Bowl loss, Mark Richt gave Georgia fans one hope that the future is getting brighter – he announced that he hoped to recruit the ‘Dream Team’.  So what is Richt’s ’Dream Team’?  No, it is not the 1992 Men’s Basketball Olympic Team that featured Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson.  Richt’s dream team are the Top 6 from the talented rich state of Georgia.  So far, he has a verbal commitments from 4 out of the 6 — #2  – DE Ray Drew,  #3 – TE Jay Rome, #5 – ATH – Nick Marshall, and #6 – WR Malcolm Mitchell.  So who is missing – #4 – LB James Vaughters who committed to Stanford and the #1 recruit – RB Crowell.  Crowell is expected to announce his decision on Wednesday.  It is rumored that he will either select Georgia or Alabama.

Everything is riding on Crowell.  The Bulldog Nation could finally let the 2010 season go and will be able to ponder if Crowell could do the same thing as Marcus Lattimore did for South Carolina.  The running back situation at Georgia is up for grabs as the current RBs – Caleb King and Washaun Ealey – have failed to take advantage of the opportunity even though both of them were highly recruited.

Obviously, one recruit is not going to make/break a major football program.  But with all the issues the Dawgs faced last year, they are grasping that maybe this ‘Dream Team’ recruiting class can bring back the glory.  If Crowell decides to go elsewhere, there goes the ‘Dream Team’ and there goes all the Dawgs fans wondering if Richt still has it.
