The NFL is retarded. I know that nobody likes to use that word, but sometimes this league deserves that word in every respect. Later today the Hall of Fame inductees will be announced. There is always plenty of speculation as to which players will get in and who will be snubbed. Cris Carter is a Hall of Famer. Period. There is no debate. When he retired he was no less then second in every category related to receivers. The fact that his voting percentage went down after his first year is simply one of the highlights as to why the NFL has this system wrong. Yesterday, HOF QB Jim Kelly talked about the Hall of Fame and said he didn’t think Cris Carter would get in this year. This had nothing to do with merit, but Kelly said that if his teammate, Andre Reed got in, that it would be likely that the NFL would not put two receivers in at the same time. The only problem with this statement is that there are two receivers that are far above Reed in terms of Hall of Fame credentials. Both the Viking’s Carter and Raider’s Tim Brown exceeded Reed in every category and neither had a great QB throwing to them. When it comes to the Hall of Fame, the NFL is like baseball; slow to change and antiquated.
Jim Kelly is probably right. Cris Carter will be snubbed today, but if he is, the other issue nobody is talking about the fact that Carter is probably still receiving some backlash after he made comments following his snub in his first year of eligibility. For that performance I give Cris an A+ and the NFL an F. If a player is an undisputed Hall of Famer, than why make him wait. Why punish him for expecting his greatness to be acknowledged. Carter was a role model during his years in Minnesota and was a part of many very good teams. His teams always won, even if they never won the biggest prize; the Super Bowl. Jim Kelly and Andre Reed never won that game either.
