Seton Hall Couldn’t Close Door on Huskies
Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Feb 5 2011 @ 9:38 pm In UConn | No Comments
The Seton Hall Pirates haven’t beaten the Connecticut Huskies in their last 10 tries, tonight they almost ended that streak. The Pirates closed the first half with a run to lead by 5, then they got the lead up to as many as 14. Then, the Pirates went cold as Uconn held them scoreless for 8 minutes to storm back into the game and take the lead, the Huskies held on to win 61-59. Uconn had lost it’s last 2 games to teams that played zone, Syracuse and Louisville. Uconn was in it until the end in both of those games as well, the difference tonight was that THEY were the ones closing the game out. Jeremy Hazell and Jeff Robinson both had double-doubles for the Pirates, Hazell had 20 points and Robinson had 15. Uconn won because of it’s mental toughness, the Huskies got down by 14 and instead of giving up they decided to fight. Maybe that’s what has been missing from the Huskies in their 2 previous losses, Jim Calhoun coached teams are known for being fighters. I don’t know if you can say that the Huskies truly fought until the end in their 2 previous contests. Kemba Walker has been struggling recently, those struggles continued to night as he brought his team back to win. Walker’s game should not be defined by his shot chart, he brings much much more to the table. When the lead go to as many as 14, it was Walker who decided to take the fight to the Pirates. Walker had 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 7-19, he filled out every other category on the stat sheet though. His back-court mate Jeremy Lamb had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, and great 2nd half defense on Hazell during that huge Uconn run. Uconn got out-rebounded, but Alex Oriahki had a good game. A.O. had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks!! The biggest block being his last, he blocked a potential game tying 3 point attempt by Hazell. Shabazz Napier continued his stellar play, Roscoe Smith helped by scoring 6 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Napier finished the game with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals!! Uconn is now 18-4 and 6-4 in the Big East, their next opponent is St. Johns on Thursday at the Garden. I do my best to tweet during every Uconn game, follow me @willietspeaks to share with me what you see during games.
