Brooks could fit on Blazer Bench

The Blazers are getting ready to welcome back Brandon Roy and Marcus Camby, and the reinforcements can’t come soon enough. Their Ally Mcbeal-thin bench continues to to cause them issues, so much so that Nate McMillan almost completely abandoned it in last nights victory over the Chicago Bulls. Rudy Fernandez has stepped up in the last few games to provide what they’ve needed, but we know how hot and cold he runs.
Regardless of who is set to return, the Blazers can use an infusion of energy and one guy who could fit the bill is Aaron Brooks. Brooks was the NBA’s most improved player a year ago, but after an early season ankle injury he now finds himself behind Kyle Lowry on Rick Adelman’s depth chart, struggling to find consistency in his minutes and his game. He was suspended for last nights game for leaving the court in the fourth quarter of the Rockets win over a Memphis on Saturday, an indication of his frustration with his current role on the team.
Brooks’ shot selection has been poor this season and Kyle Lowry is the better defender and more gritty lead guard. Brooks may have been pressing to prove that he deserves his starting spot back, he could be still recovering from the injury, or maybe its his impending restricted free agent status, but whatever the reason he has had a highly disappointing year thus far.
There a rumblings he has fallen out of favor in Houston, and he could be a perfect fit as the Blazers sixth man. As we’ve said, the Blazers can use a player with his quickness and scoring ability off the bench and he would be a perfect contrast to the more deliberate Andre Miller. The Rockets have other options at guard, in Chase Budinger and Courtney Lee, and if he becomes expendable Brooks’ speed and range from downtown would allay what is this Blazer team’s most glaring weakness.
His value has without question decreased from it’s high point off of last season and its possible he could be had in a deal involving Camby or Pryzbilla with a first round pick also coming into play. Daryl Morey won’t just give him away, but he certainly seems highly gettable at this point.
Just a nugget for you to chew on..
