Blazers Won’t Rush Roy

Brandon Roy was being a bit bullish on Monday declaring himself ready to return to action as early as the Blazers next game this Friday. You’ll excuse his eagerness though, he doesn’t want to watch anymore.
“I was excited,” Roy said. “Just waking up this morning, I was happy to know I was going to get involved with practice … just running out here with the guys, playing, competing. I haven’t been able to compete in so long. Which is good. I just had a good time out there. It was a fun practice”.
The last time Roy was on the court, it wasn’t Brandon Roy, and the Blazers shut him down to evaluate his options. Roy went under the knife on January 17th for a relatively minor knee(s) surgery in contrast to more risky, long-term procedures that were briefly considered. The time table for his return was four to six weeks, so by returning this weekend he would actually be a bit ahead of schedule. But the Blazers have his future to be concerned about, so there’s no reason to rush him. Not with the team hanging tough in his absence, posting an 18-11 record.
“We want to slowly work those guys back,” McMillan said of Roy and Camby, whose return to the lineup looks imminent as well.
Roy may be anxious, but there is no upside to pushing it, and he can accept that. “I feel good but at the same time I understand where he’s coming from,” Roy said. “He wants me to feel great.
I’m of the belief they should leave him home for their upcoming three game trip. Allow him to work out and rest the knee for a couple extra days, and bring him back in front of a welcoming Rose Garden crowd next Wednesday against the Hornets. I’d rather air on the side of caution and over-coddle, then put him on a plane to Toronto. But that’s just me.
Regardless of what the Blazers decide to do, for the moment, things are looking up for Roy. He made it through a scrimmage Wednesday afternoon, and was optimistic about his return talking to reporters afterward.
“It was a positive day for me.”
“If I can move pain free, then I think I’m a really good player,” Roy said. “As long as I can stay that way, I’m pretty excited about going forward.”
