YPSILANTI, Mich. —- Well Uncle Mel first stood outside in the falling snow while waiting for the doors of the football practice facility to open but with no success. Not to be denied access Uncle Mel walked across the frozen and snow covered tundra to the football offices and after kicking off the reminder of winter from the shoes and proceeded to go up the stairs and find Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English.
There seems to be a great deal of fanfare around the country about football recruits and what school is going to be better and on the road to notoriety but here in Ypsilanti, Michigan and the home of the Eastern Michigan University Eagles it seems to be a great big secret – nobody wants talk about it!
Opening the door to the football office inside the Convocation Center, Uncle Mel was greeted by a young woman working behind a counter and she looked at Uncle Mel with suspension but she did not decline to help Uncle Mel’s and his quest to find answers to the recruiting questions.
“You should know that he is a very busy doing coach business,” the office professional said, “But I will check to see if he can give you some time!”
She stepped around the counter area and then she walked through a doorway and then she seemed to vanish down a long but well lit hallway.
Her return from the depths from the football offices seemed like it took forever but she came back through the doorway and returned to the area when Uncle Mel first met the hard work administrative assistant, only to be greeted with the news that coach English is not seeing anybody today but he wanted Uncle Mel to have this list of football recruits that will be arriving at Eastern Michigan University.
Uncle Mel thanked the hardest working person behind the counter area and grasp the information and left the football office and while walking back to the mobile news vehicle could not only shake off the bitter cold that reminds Uncle Mel that this is Michigan and welcome to the middle of winter but Uncle Mel could swear that there were several pairs of eyes watching him from a distance.
Successfully reaching the frost covered vehicle and getting the door open and getting the vehicle started Uncle Mel made the a quick trip just down the road to a warm and fimilar place and he found his corner table unoccupied and sat down and took a look at the list that English gave to Uncle Mel.
Eastern Michigan University football finished the season with a record of 2-10 which included a old fashion 72-3 butt whipping by Northern Illinois University to close out the season the day after Thanksgiving Day.
English describes his team’s effort against the Huskies an embarrassment.
The 2010 edition of the Eagles offense made some positive solid strides under the leadership of junior quarterback Andy Gillett and with another year of experience, he is going to be ready to make a difference, he already seems to be getting the idea of the leadership role that a quarterback needs to possess.
There is room for improvement on the offense side of the ball but the holes and the lack of talent and the ability to make tackles are on the defensive side of the ball.
English is excited about the 20 student-athlete who have committed to play football at Eastern Michigan University.
There are 13 defensive players ready to suit up and get into the mix and play, there are nine players that will be playing in the defensive secondary, three at linebackers and one defensive lineman.
This recruiting class is the largest in English’s career at Eastern Michigan University and there many states being represented, seven are from California, six from Illinois, three from Michigan and Pennsylvania, two from Ohio and one player escaped the Island state of Hawai’i to wear the uniform of Eastern Michigan University.
Spring drills begin March 8, 2011 at the practice facility just a snowball throw away from Rynearson Stadium and English is already excited to see seven of his recruits will be suited up and ready to start there college football career.
