St. Johns is back, this is the second time this season they’ve beat a top 10 team!! They bludgeoned Duke earlier this season and now they’ve upset another top 10 team by trouncing the 9th Ranked Huskies last night 89-72. Dwight Hardy had a career night in the Garden, he had 33 points on 10 shots and hit 5 of 8 three pointers. Once again the Huskies got stymied by a match-up zone, St. Johns kept the Huskies out of the paint and disrupted the entire flow of their offense. Uconn also didn’t help matters by playing matador defense for much of the game, last night might have been the WORST Uconn defensive performance this season. St. Johns got the lead up to as many as 25, Uconn only led once and that was by 2!! St. Johns scored 54 points in the 2nd half, Uconn hadn’t allowed this many points all season including the overtime games they’ve been a part of. Uconn has been struggling recently with their shooting, instead of Kemba it’s the team struggling. It takes many more attempts to get the points that were coming rather easily earlier in the season. Uconn shot terribly from the foul line last night going 13 for 22, St. Johns on the other hand was 20 of 22 at the line. Uconn didn’t put up much of a fight, I think maybe the rigorous Big East Schedule has started to affect them. I’ve been a Uconn fan all of my life, every once in a while they take a loss like this and it’s NEEDED. This is what makes Jim Calhoun a Hall of Fame coach, he will have this team performing like they were earlier in the season when they were just hungry and playing with a chip on their shoulder. That’s Uconn Basketball, Coach Calhoun WILL have these kids playing at the level they need to be at!! The Huskies really do need to figure out how to succeed against zones, no team in their right mind is going to try to play Uconn man to man. Unlike prior years, the Huskies HAVE the players to burst open zones. They just need to have a plan against them, until they do they will see nothing BUT zone defenses!! Uconn is now 6-5 in the Big East, their next game is Sunday when they host Marshon Brooks and Providence. We’ll see which Uconn team shows up and if they’re ready to change this downward spiral they’re in!!
