Shaun Rogers in Dallas? Not Likely.

The Rob Ryan connection seems to be striking again as rumors are floating around about Shaun Rogers, the big nose tackle that was recently released from Cleveland, is gauging interest in big D. It’s an interesting notion thinking about having Rogers, who has been great at getting to the quarterback in the past, but has been slowed recently due to age and injuries. Here’s the practicality of the situation.

With several teams showing interest in the 31 year old defensive tackle, Rogers will have his choice and it’s likely he will want to go to a contending team, especially after spending his pro career with Detroit and Cleveland, winning will be important factor. That would keep Dallas as an option and the aforementioned connection with Rob Ryan puts a familiar face and creates an easier transition into the defense for rogers. However, Dallas doesn’t have a great a need at the position as do the Texans or the Redskins, baring in mind that Albert Haynesworth is all but cut or traded from the Redskins, and on top of that they have a proven pro bowl tackle with Jay Ratliff. It would be interesting, though, to see a rotation of Ratliff and Rogers with a possibility of one sliding to defensive end from time to time. That kind of combo along with Ware and Spencer on the edge could make for serious pass rush.

However, this is likely to be the last contract that Roger will end up signing as a pro and even with winning in mind, money will also play a part as well as a starting job. With the Cowboys he would likely be offered less pay and play second fiddle to Ratliff, a scenario he won’t likely prefer. Teams like the Skins and Texans will have a starting job to offer and, with a greater need to fill the position, will likely throw more money his way. Rogers is a Texas native though and did play his college ball at UT, but he is also a native of Houston which would be another strong reason to think that another team like the Texans are more likely to sign him.

The connection Rogers has with Ryan certainly can’t be ignored and it’s very possible that the Cowboys could bring Rogers in to weigh their options, but in the long run the odds of actually bringing him in are probably low at best.
