The Uconn Huskies have been struggling as of late, well struggling might be a severe understatement. In the last post, I mentioned that we would learn much about this young team in this game. Well, Uconn snapped it’s slump by beating Providence 75-57. Uconn won a game that they HAD to win, they couldn’t afford to have fallen to 6-6 in the Big East. That would have surely put them in the bottom half of the conference, as well as sent Jim Calhoun over the edge. I told you that Calhoun would have these kids ready for this game, that he did as Uconn closed this game out the RIGHT way. Providence’s Marshon Brooks had a terrible shooting day from the field, going 7 of 22. Brooks still ended up with 25 points, Brooks went 1 for 8 from three point range. Sensational freshman Jeremy Lamb only had 7 points because of foul trouble, Lamb was most of the reason that Brooks shot so bad from the field. Alex Oriahki struggled to find a rhythm in this game, A.O. had 4 points and 6 rebounds in just 20 minutes of playing time. Now for Kemba Walker, Kemba has been struggling to find his touch during this tough stretch of games. Well Providence wished that was still the case, Walker not only regained his touch but stuffed the stat sheet as well. Kemba finished with 22 points going 7 of 10 from the floor, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Shabazz Napier and Roscoe Smith both had 20 minutes of playing time, but this wasn’t one of their better games. The Huskies got huge minutes from Charles Okwandu tonight, Okwandu really stepped up when Oriahki was struggling. Okwandu finished with 6 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks!! Now for the biggest surprise of the day, it looked like the light bulb went on for Jamal Coombs McDaniel. Coombs had a huge day, he scored a career-high 25 points!! Coombs previous career high was 13, on the season he is averaging 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. Today Coombs looked great moving without the ball, he also grabbed 8 rebounds, and he was efficient going 10 of 17 from the floor and 4 for 4 at the charity stripe! If this kid can prove that tonight wasn’t an anomaly and he’s really here and ready to contribute, the Huskies now have another weapon in their arsenal. Uconn is now 7-5 in the Big East and 19-5 overall, up next for the Huskies it doesn’t get any easier as they host Georgetown on Wednesday. Can the Huskies build on tonight’s win and parlay this win into a streak?? We’ll find out on Wednesday!!
