HE’S BAAAACCCKKKK!!! Kemba Walker wanted the world to know his recent play against Providence wasn’t just a fluke, he may have served notice to the rest of the Big East as well as Uconn beat Georgetown 78-70. The Hoyas had won 8 straight Big East games, the Huskies were trying to get back into the top of the Conference. The Huskies also got another big game out of Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, he had 25 against Providence and last night against the Hoyas Coombs went for 23!! Coombs was one timed named the National Prep School Player of the Year, he’s been in Calhoun’s dog house for a year and as of late he’s playing his way out of it!! Coombs recent level of play just gives you an idea as to how DEEP this Uconn team is. They are young and extremely talented, every game these younger players gain more confidence. In the first half Coombs steadied the Huskies with 14 points, Walker got going in the second half!! Walker had at least 3 ESPN Top 10 highlight worthy plays in this game, I will describe what may have been the most impressive one to you. Walker penetrated into the lane and picked up his dribble, got stuck and chose to throw it off the back board, he then went and got it off the back board and layed it in!! Georgetown is a very good basketball team, last night they ran into the UCONN HUSKIES not just Kemba Walker. Tyler Olander is another young Husky who is starting to play with a little more confidence. Olander only had 4 points, but he looks like he can turn into a pick and pop type big. Alex Oriahki got his confidence back as well going for 10 points and 8 rebounds. Jeremy Lamb did a great job defensively on Georgetown star Austin Freeman who finished with 12 points on 4 of 13 shooting. Lamb scored 8 points himself, Roscoe Smith and Shabazz Napier’s contributions didn’t show up on the stat sheet. All 3 freshman played great defense and really hustled. Kemba Walkers final stat line was 31 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block!! I knew Georgetown didn’t play much zone, but I didn’t think they would continue to rely on their man to man defense against the Huskies. When the Hoyas finally decided to zone the Huskies, both Walker and Coombs were hot. Uconn’s record improved to 20-5 and 8-5 in the Big East, their reward for beating the Hoyas is going into Louisville on Friday and taking on the Cardinals. I cannot explain how happy I am for Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, I was high on the kid’s talent out of high school and he didn’t play anything like himself last year. It’s nice to see him finally put it together, the kid really moves well without the ball and he’s been an efficient scorer. I hope he continues to build on his recent success, it can only benefit the Huskies going forward!!
