Jarko Ruutu has been traded off to the Anaheim Ducks for a draft pick, as Bryan Murray continues to have one of the busiest weeks of his life. Ruutu will fit in well with his new team, already stocked with his countrymen Selanne and Koivu and lacking the pesky presence that will surely sucker opponents into silly penalties. He also rejoins former teammate Andy Sutton, the player known best for his nickname in Ottawa as Mount Sutton and a hilarious interview after the Pittsburgh game where he demands to know if the reporter in question is an expert.
Ruutu says the the team is going young, a strategy that has worked for teams like Chicago in the past. Indeed, Ottawa seems to have learned from its past mistakes of signing players past their prime and are going young with their picks for 2011 and making good use of their farm team for replacement players. They may be going a bit too young, though, as the team is being plucked of some of its most familiar faces in exchange for unknowns from the AHL and the up and coming roster. The team suiting up in Boston tonight is not going to look familiar to many people, least of all the Ottawa faithful.
Chris Kelly will make his first appearance in Ottawa in a Boston outfit, bringing to mind the sadness of a former Senator turned Bruin with fantastic results: none other than the Captain, big Z, Chara. Will Kelly use his energy and gritty game against us? It’s a fair bet that he will and that Ottawa will feel the pain early on.
Ruutu, Kelly and Fisher will probably all get the chance to see something that the rest of us in town won’t see this year: the playoffs. While the rebuild is a painful and uncertain process, it can only be hoped that the draft will bring hope back to Ottawa. We will just have to be patient.
