Rangers Should Reboot at Trade Deadline

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I say, if it is broken, see if you can fix it with what you got first before spending a wad on a flimsy new one.
The NHL trade deadline is around the corner. Teams have until February 28 to rework their rosters for a playoff push or revamp for the future.
The Rangers have been up and down all season, leaving general manager Glen Sather some thinking to do.
They’ve clawed their way through games like comeback kids with emotional victories followed by lackluster duds. Injuries have knocked out veterans and sidepieces opening the door for rookie magic. An offensive superstar who only finds the back of the net every now and then, a towering grinder leading the team in goals, a mischievous sparkplug gone missing, and a rotating third defensive pair and you have yourself 66 points for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Not too shabby, but not superb.
Yet when they are on the same page, they can be quite formidable opponents.
Rather than dealing young talent and depth, Sather should sit tight and wait this rough patch out.
Marian Gaborik doesn’t need another center…at least not right this second. Lord knows, how many has John Tortorella thrown around him this season. He needs confidence and some stable line mates. And goals. Goals would be nice.
If Sather is to make a serious run at signing Brad Richards this summer when he becomes a free agent, he should avoid clunking up the cap space and changing the locker room dynamic with desperate trade pieces, i.e. a Stephen Weiss. Another 20-goal second line center is not what the Rangers need.
The Dallas Stars are doing too well right now to be willing to part ways with their center just yet so it’s best to wait it out.
As for Gaborik, it’s not time to ship him out. Look at Ilya Kovalchuk.
If there is one area Sather could toy with it’s on defense. A puck moving offensive quarterback for the power play would be a great, much needed addition. The defense is young led by Staal and Girardi since Wade Redden was demoted to Connecticut and Michal Rozsival was sent to Phoenix.
Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy and Steve Eminger haven’t exactly given Tortorella a go-to third defensive pair he feels confident in.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post mentioned Filip Kuba of the Ottawa Senators as a possibility. The 34-year-old has played with Gaborik in Minnesota and had success under Torts in Tampa Bay with 15 goals. But his numbers have been on the decline since. With a -25 rating he doesn’t exactly look like the best upgrade.
Tomas Kaberle? Off to Boston.
Dennis Wideman or Sheldon Souray? No thank you.
Pricey veterans with big shots are nice so long as they don’t cough up the puck adding some offense for opposing teams too.
Bryan McCabe or Joni Pitkanen? Maybe, but at what cost?
Wants: Defensive QB for the power play
Possible Trade Bait: Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy, Erik Christensen, Mats Zuccarello
Rumor Mill: The Fourth Period reported earlier this month that Sather supposedly spoke with the Oilers about Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky.
