Flames Freeze Habs – Hagman

41,022 fans braved the elements and had a great time watching the Calgary Flames knock off the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the second ever Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. The ice wasn’t the best, but they did a good job considering they couldn’t use the zamboni’s. The wind was probably the biggest factor as we had one of the windier days of the winter making the temperatures of -10 feel close to -25. But the most important thing was the Calgary Flames put on a great show, and needless to say the Flames and the NHL certainly made a few dollars off of the game.

There isn’t much to say about the game as the ice conditions were really better suited for the Calgary Flames north-south game as opposed to the Canadiens finesse game. Rene Bourque led the way with a couple goals, and Miikka Kiprusoff posted the NHL’s first ever outdoor game shutout turning aside 39 Canadiens shots. Carey Price was the Canadiens best player and while the mask he debuted for the game was a little creepy I quite liked it, and the honoring of Jacques Plante.

The two points for the Flames moved them up into 6th place in the Western Conference and Calgary has showed no signs of slowing down from their torrid pace. The Boston Bruins come to town next and had better be prepared for this Flames team who has bought into Brent Sutter’s system.

Niklas Hagman has been placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames. I’m sure the Flames would not be too upset if someone picked him up on waivers as Nik has been relegated to the Flames 4th line and needs a change of scenery to rediscover the game he does have. Ottawa and Atlanta are two teams I could see taking a run at Hagman even though Nik has another year on his contract at $3M. If Hagman clears waivers it has not been stated if he would be sent to Abbotsford or remain in Calgary. If he does go down it will free up some more cap space for the Flames leading into the trade deadline.

Have a good one!
