Souray clears waivers

The Edmonton Oilers are stuck with their $5.4M-dollar albatross.

The Oilers failed to relieve themselves of Sheldon Souray’s hefty contract, after Souray cleared waivers earlier this morning. Souray will remain on load to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, after failing to capture the interest of another NHL, after being placed on the 48-hour waiver wire Saturday.

Unless Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini is able to toss the former NHLer into a trade prior to the league’s Feb. 28th deadline, the team will be left to try and peddle the hard-shooting blueliner during the off-season, or settle for the less attractive option of buying out Souray at two-thirds of the remaining year on his deal.

If another club had claimed the Elk Island, Alberta native off waivers, it would have cost them half of his 2010-11 salary, or $2.7M, which was obviously too rich for the other 29 NHL clubs.

Hall’s first “Hatty”
Despite sitting last overall in the league for the second consecutive season, Oilers Nation is catching some glimpses of what could be an exciting future, as rookie sensation Taylor Hall finds his way in this, his rookie NHL campaign.

Hall took another stride Saturday afternoon vs. the Atlanta Thrashers. With his team down 3-1, Hall took the team on his back, popping three consecutive goals in the third period, including the winning tally, to lead the copper and blue to an exciting come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the visitors.

To his credit, the young sniper quickly acknowledged Atlanta’s lack of physical commitment in front of their goal, and decided to take full advantage by asserting his presence in close.

It was an exciting display of pure youthful exuberance off the wing; power forward-like brilliance Edmonton fans haven’t witnessed since the days of Anderson and Messier.

Without question, the kids is an impact player, who at this young point in hisĀ  career, is already showing splashes of magic that have the capacity crowds at Rexall standing on their feet, high-fiving one another.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up…sticks down.
