Cowboys Draft Needs As Combine Nears

With Combine set to start Thursday in Indianapolis players are looking to solidify their draft positions or move up on draft boards, and in some cases move down the boards. The results of the next few days will effect every team when draft day rolls around. Such is true for the Cowboys whose needs consist of need at OL, S, CB, LB, and RB.

The Cowboys should have their priorities set to grab an offensive lineman first, probably a guard, especially with their line growing in age and the effect the line suffered from injuries during and before the season. However, if either of the top 2 DBs were to drop to them it is likely that they wouldn’t hesitate to grab either Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara, though Amukamara is the only one likely to slide and be available at the number 9 pick. Should Amukamara not be available at the 9 spot addressing the line would seem the most likely move with Marc Colombo and Leonard Davis both at the age of 32 and Kyle Kosier not far behind at the age of 31. They could target Tyron Smith OT out of USC, Nate Solder out of Colorado, or Marcus Cannon OT out of TCU. Each of these players would be solid picks, the problem would be that at the number 9 spot it would be a reach for them, with the likelihood that they could be had in the mid the late part of the first round.

The safety position, another glaring need for the team, is one they can likely address in the early part of the second round with a lack of first round talent at this position and on the team for that matter. Though there isn’t an immediate and pressing of a need at the LB and RB position, the Cowboys will likely address them in the draft this year. Sean Lee will getting more playing time and Bradie James had another solid year, but with Keith Brooking’s tenure in the NFL nearing an end they could look to add some depth and some youth to the position. Also, the Cowboys will not likely be retaining Marion Barber this season and though Tashard Choice and Felix Jones will be able to carry the load, the team may be looking for a late round bruising back to fill the void.

In the end it’s looking more and more like the Cowboys are one team in particular that is in need of a new CBA to be agreed to so that they have an option to trade down in the draft, otherwise they may be found reaching early or taking a player that doesn’t fill their most pressing needs like a defensive end.
