Hall, Eberle, roll out copper and blue carpet for Av’s new netminder

Nothing like being traded, then unceremoniously humiliated on home ice, before your new fans.

The Edmonton Oilers gave goaltender Brian Elliott a warm welcome to his new home tonight, embarrassing the Colorado Avalanche’s new netminder in his debut at the Pepsi Centre, 5-1, before a disappointed sold-out crowd.

Carrying the league’s worst power play into the Mile High City, Edmonton saw its fortunes with the extra man improve, with PP tallies from Dustin Penner and rookie sensation, Taylor Hall, both scoring their 21st goals of the season.

Sam Gagner, Eberle and defenceman Kurtis Foster also beat Elliott, the latter two duplications of one another, top shelf over the former Ottawa goaltender’s head. While Avalanche fans paid witness to an embarrassing loss on home ice, undoubtedly they got their money’s worth, while catching a glimpse of Edmonton’s young guns in full flight, as Hall and Eberle each tallied a pair of points (1-1), the former his sixth point in the last four games, including four goals.

Only 24 hours after another tough road loss in Minny (4-1), Edmonton turned it up a notch tonight, anxious to take advantage of a team still in shock, following the trade that sent Avalanche power forward, Chris Stewart, to St. Louis for D-man Erik Johnson.

Like night and day for the Oil; their passes were crisp, their feet were moving and their young netminder, as he’s done on many a night this season, held the fort early in the opening frame, while his teammates found their road legs.

Full marks for a solid road win in Denver. The Oilers open a five-game home stand Friday night, when they play host to Stewart and the Blues down at The Drug Store.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up….sticks down.

Edmonton goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped 38 of 39 shots for the win.
