Hawkeyes at the Combine: Ryan Donahue Wants to Show He’s the Best

It’s Day One of the NFL Combine and there’s already been a few stories and quotes from Indy for Hawkeye Nation.

One name you don’t hear too often nationally but one that we know well in Hawkeye Nation is punter Ryan Donahue. Donahue is joining his Hawkeye brethren this weekend in Indy and said today to the media [1]after his early start this morning at Lucas Oil Stadium, “I want to show that I’m the best punter here. This is time for the big show, this is time for the NFL. I’m here to show myself and show other teams I’m the best.”

Who knew punters could have such swagger?

Donahue futher noted that he also wanted to kick but Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz urged him to stick with being a punter because “they’re few and far between.”

Good advice.

Compliments of Hawkeye Nation, here’s a link to a television interview [2]with Donahue from the combine. He’s full of confidence, says he enjoyed playing at Iowa, speaks about the extensive combine physical and no, he hasn’t taken the infamous Wonderlic test yet.

And perhaps the $64,000 question that Donahue was asked by reporters today: What’s the deal with rhabdogate?

Donahue did not offer any insight on the most recent troubles at Iowa with the offseason training that resulted in rhabdomyolysis but earlier this week, there was some press on this, that uh well, was a little negative [3]on Iowa’s handling of the situation.

Last week, the press was all over whether there’d be a flurry of team departures.

But getting back to the combine…how does Donahue rank among his punting peers? According to National Football Post, they’re ranking has him as No. 1 [4]with a 5.5 grade; he is projected to go in the sixth or seventh round [5]. Donahue was clutch this past season, ranking third in the conference and 15th nationally with a 44.6 average. Donahue owns five of Iowa’s 14 longest punts, [6]covering 82 (second), 76 (fifth), 73, twice (10th) and 71 (14th) yards.

It would be nice to see Donahue succeed in the NFL.

Looking ahead, here’s the combine workout schedule:

Friday: Specialists
Saturday: Offensive linemen, tight ends
Sunday: Quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs
Monday: Defensive linemen, linebackers
Tuesday: Defensive backs

Stay tuned for more Hawkeye Nation news from the Combine.
