KINGS ARE JUST TOO QUICK

Trying to bounce back from a three game losing streak, the Ducks played host to their freeway rivals, the Los Angeles Kings, tonight kicking off the first of a seven game home stand.  They did so, however, without their number one goaltender (Hiller) who is “getting some treatment,” and their top two centers – Koivu was scratched with a groin injury and Getzlaf missed the game to be with his wife after she gave birth to their first son today, Ryder.

In a fast-paced game in which they never trailed, the Kings handed the Ducks their fourth loss in a row and took over 8th place in the Western Conference Division, sending the Ducks into 9th place.  Although the Ducks’ defense looked immensely better than in has in the last three games and they outshot the Kings 27-18, they just couldn’t put the puck in the back of the net when they needed to.  The Ducks’ goals were scored by the consistent Selanne and Perry, who is on pace to beat his career high goals scored in a season (32 in ’08-’09).

The zebras let the two teams play a very energetic game with the first period marred only by fighting majors to the two Kyles (Clifford and Chipchura).  No penalties were called in the second period and only two simultaneous minors were called for roughing in the third.  The game was won on Willie Mitchell’s blue line shot in the third in which he went top shelf on a screened McElhinney, who never really had a chance.  McElhinney was in goal for his fourth game in a row in which the Ducks have had 24 goals scored against them.

The Ducks play the Minnesota Wild (again) on Friday, after having just lost to them a week before 1-5.  The Wild are two points above the Ducks in the standings.  Hopefully, with the assistance of newly obtained, Jarrko Ruutu, the Selanne’s Finnish teammate, the Ducks can add to their team a skilled veteran who isn’t afraid to drop gloves if he has to, but can also put pucks on net.

In other news, the Pens didn’t help the Ducks out any, by losing to the San Jose Sharks 2-3 tonight in overtime.  The Pens are without 10 players and are barely managing to score on a regular basis.
