Marquette Tops Blaney Led Huskies in OT

Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Feb 25 2011 @ 12:15 am In UConn | No Comments

The Uconn Huskies were without Head Coach Jim Calhoun for this game due to a death in the family(Sister-in Law). George Blaney has filled in countless times before in Calhoun’s absence, Blaney lost in his first game as Head Coach this season. Marquette beat Uconn in over time 74-67, that gave Marquette their first road win against a ranked team this year! Uconn started the game off great, even leading 13-3 at one point before Marquette stormed back into the game. Uconn was down at the half by 11, the Huskies came out in the 2nd half and locked up on defense forcing Marquette into bad shots. Uconn had the lead with time winding down in regulation, but Kemba Walker(27 points) had an uncharacteristic turnover and Marquette was able to score. Uconn got the ball back, but Walker missed as time expired. Uconn’s turnover problems continued into the extra period as Marquette jumped out to a lead and held on for the win. Uconn out-rebounded Marquette 52 to 39, the Huskies usually take pretty good care of the ball. That wasn’t the case against Marquette as Uconn had 17 turnovers!! Marquette only turned the ball over 8 times, Alex Oriahki had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Those were the only 2 Huskies to score in double-figures, Jamal Coombs-McDaniel’s recent streak of good play ended as he struggled from the field going 2 of 6 for 5 points. Jeremy Lamb scored 8 points, but more importantly he grabbed 12 boards. Neils Giffey had a decent outing, Giffey had 9 points and 4 rebounds. Roscoe Smith and Shabazz Napier combined to shoot 1 for 12!! Coach Blaney’s record is now 7-8, the Huskies get Calhoun back for their next game which is on the road against Cincinnati. Uconn’s record is now 20-7 and 8-7 in the Big East, they are currently in 9th place in the Conference!! So Sunday’s game will be huge as teams continue to jockey for those top 4 spots in the Conference, if you end up in the top 4 you get a bye in the Big East Tournament. Let’s see which Uconn team shows up Sunday!!
