Uconn’s been struggling of late, Kemba Walker has been in a funk and the younger players may have hit a wall of some sort. Well the Freshman Trio of Jermey Lamb, Shabazz Napier, and Roscoe Smith combined to score 39 points in today’s win over the Cincinatti Bearcats. Uconn also got 16 points from Kemba as they won on the road 67-59, Uconn led for all but 29 seconds of this game. The 29 second deficit was stopped by a Roscoe Smith 3 pointer that ignited a 12-2 Uconn run. Yancy Gates led the Bearcats with 14 points and 8 rebounds, the Bearcats aren’t a bad team as they have beat both Villanova and Georgetown earlier this year. Kemba was in foul trouble in the first half with 3 fouls, the younger guys defintely did a great job stepping up for their older teammates. Alex Oriahki has been in somewhat of a funk his self, he has been widly inconsistent on the offensive end of the floor all year. I think all Uconn fans thought this year was going to be different for Alex, I personally think it’s a combination of his lack of confidence and the guards missing him when he’s open. I hope that Oriahki gets back on track, the reason I say that is that Uconn was out-rebounded by the Bearcats today. Oriahki only had 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block in 26 minutes of play today. As Uconn goes forward, they need both of their leaders(Kemba/A.O.) to bring their A games every night. Kemba only had 16 tonight, but he did a great job of not fighting the extra attention he has been getting. Instead of maybe rushing or forcing the issue, Kemba was even more of a willing passer by getting rid of the ball as soon as the pressure came and his teammates responded by hitting their open shots!! Lamb was extremely efficient tonight scoring 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, he hit 3 of his 4 three-point attempts, and he grabbed 5 boards. Roscoe Smith rebounded from a terrible game to have 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting, he also went 3 of 4 from three-point lead, and Smith also grabbed 5 boards. Napier(Baz) also rebounded from a down game last game by hitting 2 three-pointers on his way to 11 points, Baz also had 6 assists and 2 steals. The 15th Ranked Huskies have another tough road game Wednesday night against West Virginia. Uconn is now 21-7 on the year and 9-7 in the Big East, that’s just good enough for 7th place in the Conference.
