Pierce, Allen Rally Celtics Past Clippers

Once again, the third quarter haunted the Los Angeles Clippers.

After holding a 47-40 lead at the half, the Clippers were outscored by the Boston Celtics 34-21 in the third frame, and lost for the 10th time in 12 games 99-92 Saturday night at Staples Center.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 24 points and Ray Allen chipped in 22 as the Celtics improved to 42-15 on the season.

Newcomers Nenad Krstic and Jeff Green combined for 16 points and seven rebounds in their first game with the team.

Randy Foye led L.A. with a season-high 32 points, but the Clippers were unable to find consistent offense for the majority of the second half.

21 turnovers certainly didn’t help their efforts, and neither did the free-throw discrepancy.

The Celtics shot 41 foul shots in comparison to 21 for the Clippers. Boston made 35 of them.

Boston shot just 41 percent from the field, but when you shoot as many free throws as they did, it isn’t too difficult to make up the difference.

The Clippers were outdone on the boards as well, as the Celtics won the rebound battle 43-36, including 14 on the offensive end .

Blake Griffin scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his 50th double-double of the season, and Chris Kaman added a 16 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor.

However, the Clippers got very little out of the rest of the supporting cast. The six other Clippers that played combined to score just 23 points total.

Mo Williams and Jamario Moon, acquired in a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, were inactive because paperwork between the two clubs is still being sorted out. They will not be eligible to play until Baron Davis completes his physical, which is expected to take place Sunday morning.

Fortunately, leading scorer Eric Gordon is expected back from a wrist injury next week.

The Clippers will travel to face the Sacramento Kings Monday night before returning home to take on the Houston Rockets Wednesday.
